What can archaeology really add to the incalculable number of intact documents, eye-witness accounts and even film reportages which form the already well documented narrative of the Great War? This exhibition provides the comprehensive answer: one has to experience the roughness of the shrapnel, see the piercedthrough helmets with one’s own eyes, appreciate the size of machine gun bullets, speculate about the strange content of a box of souvenirs, guess at the expression behind a gas mask, question the use in practice of a sabre or shield, espy a burst of humanity in the dignity of a grave... in order truly to comprehend just what daily life was in this world of death.
