'100 masterpieces of Versailles' exhibition

The Château de Versailles at the Fine Arts Museum of Arras

From 27th September 2014 to 20th March 2014

Housed in the ancient Saint-Vaast Abbey, a unique eighteenth century monastic complex, the Arras Musée des Beaux-Arts is once again playing host to the Château de Versailles after the success of Roulez carrosses !. This new exhibition promises to be an event of some prestige: one hundred or so masterpieces from the collection of the
Château de Versailles, some loaned out for the first time, will be on show in Arras for a period of 18 months.
Paintings, sculptures, furniture, objets d’art... Visitors will discover works executed by the greatest artists of the period, made from the most precious of materials, like the bust of Louis XIV from the Ambassadors’ Staircase, the monumental Gobelins tapestries, the Dauphin’s fine writing desk, the original sculpture from the Latona fountain, Marie-Antoinette’s porcelains or the sculptural group Apollo Served by the Nymphs, a monument of seventeenth century French sculpture.
These masterpieces line the visitors’ route as they explore the various places and periods of the royal residence: an ambience of marble, bronze, gold and silver evoking the sumptuous Italianinfluenced décor of the Grand Apartments and the Hall of Mirrors, an ambience of wood where a taste for comfort and refinement substitute for the studied effect of majesty, an ambience of water and fountains which are the soul of the gardens, an ambience of parks and of forest evoking the fantasy of wooded groves, a floral ambience evoking the Trianon Palaces, an ambience of festivities and fireworks evoking the most dazzling celebrations of the reigns of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI.
